Plus Size, Mid Size and Straight Size - Why we don't use these terms at Molke

"Plus size", "Mid size" and "Straight size" - are terms that you hear a lot, especially in the fashion industry. At Molke, we choose not to use them and here's why:

Words are incredibly powerful. They can empower, unite and embolden, but they can also be harmful, divisive and triggering.

For some, these terms can bring people together and serve as a reference point when searching for someone who is a similar size to you. Many content creators and influencers use these terms to find their audience and describe their body type. This can help to create a community and bring people together (which is always a good thing!).

On the other hand, terms that categorise people based on size can be othering, create unnecessary divisions, and can be weaponised or used to discriminate. Insinuating that there is a ‘normal’ size range and that everyone who doesn’t fit into that category is plus-sized, promotes fatphobia. It is often used as justification for less choice, higher prices and poor in-store availability. It creates a tiered system where people who wear bigger sizes get a raw deal.

Fashion has never been particularly inclusive, and using terms and divisions such as these paves the way for brands to limit their range for some and not others. That's not ok by us.

Molke often gets classified as a plus-size brand, though we are not. We are simply a brand offering an inclusive size range, so more people can wear and enjoy our underwear. We believe no one should be left out.

We know that language is a very personal thing, however our goal is to bring people together rather than divide them. This is why you won’t see plus size, mid size and standard size on our website.
