What happens when HRT isn't an option? By Anne Clarke

This Menofest blog was kindly written by Anne, who was unable to take HRT for menopause symptoms after a breast cancer diagnosis:
"I had an idea that I was in perimenopause when my periods gradually became less frequent. I knew people who were already experiencing this so I was aware of what was happening. Honestly, I was glad to see the back of them!
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and as part of my recovery, because of the type of cancer I had, it was suggested I didn’t take HRT for my menopause symptoms. It is not 100% that you cannot take HRT with my type of cancer. There is a slight increase in the chance the cancer would return so I decided to manage without it.
Symptoms have been many and varied. Hot flashes and night sweats have been horrible. Watery eyes, brain fog, weight gain, joint pain, fatigue, mood swings, and probably a few other things. I am very lucky as I have friends also going through menopause, so we all laugh/chat/moan about how we are feeling. It really helps to be able to share without judgement.
I found there was very little help out there, we are so unaware of how many different symptoms there are. It is still seen as a bit taboo so people don’t talk about it but I think that’s slowly changing.
I do regular exercise and brain teaser games on my phone. They are simple changes, but they keep me motivated and keep my brain ticking over. I find something as simple as going for a walk and getting some fresh air can help.
It is so important to be open about what you’re going through, then you realise how many people are going through it too. If you are not sure about things, it is important to ask for help and advice. If I had to give one piece of advice it would be - don’t beat yourself up if you are having a rubbish day and if you are, tell someone. If I am having a bad day I tell my husband. It takes the load off me and then he knows it’s nothing he’s done so he gives me some space. But most importantly… a cuddle always helps!"
